Gift of Sarah S. Graham, VC Class of 1935

This pink dress was worn by a senior, Sarah Sillcocks (Graham) on Class Day 1935. All of the seniors ordered the same dress from the popular New York City department store Peck & Peck, which had an outpost on 12 Collegeview Ave. The dress came in pink, sea green, yellow, and purple. It is an example of the popular and durable shirtwaist dress style. The girls who wore these dresses marked the end of their Vassar education by rejecting a frivolous dress in favor of a more practical, egalitarian style, showing their parents that they were ready to enter the challenges of adulthood during a Depression.
